Talk and Q&A at the Humanist Hub: "What Movies Teach Us"
Updated: Jan 9, 2018
A case against the Hero's Journey.
I loved giving the final talk of the Humanist Hub's summer speaker series. I got to lay out my case against the Hero's Journey, at least as it has been presented in Hollywood since the 80s: maybe "white males are destined to be violent" is not the most relevant message to send to generation after generation.
Stay for the Q&A, during which I drop a surprising title as an example of a Hero Journey critique.
Reflection questions for you:
What movies (or literature) are your scripture? What lessons do you draw from them?
When have you learned that some historical or conventional wisdom was mythical? How did it feel?
