About me

Glad you're here.

I'm Colin, and I'm a writer, public speaker, facilitator, and communications consultant. I'm passionate about social justice and storytelling.

I'm a fan of Colin Stokes the comedic writer and Colin Stokes the cellist and Colin Stokes the builder of an elaborate Hobbit house for his sheep. You should be too!

I grew up in the 1980s, when the "hero's journey" formula really took off in Hollywood. Now that my quests for romance and adventure have succeeded, I've been noticing how unhelpful the template is as a guide for actual humans. Especially the ways it made me think being white and male entitled me to victory over my enemies and possession of whatever and whoever I wanted.

So my work explores the stories embedded in our culture, and how we can expose what's untrue in them while developing truer stories for the next generation. I've spoken at schools, non-profits, and corporations about parenting, privilege, and movies, which I know about because I am a parent with privilege who watched a lot of movies. My three talks at TEDxBeaconStreet have been viewed more than 7 million times. But I'm no authority; I learn from others every single day.

I've worked at education non-profits, supporting their missions with marketing, design, employee engagement, and organizational learning about racism and inclusion. Before all that I was a high school public speaking champion from Texas, an art major at Harvard, and a professional actor in Boston and New York. That was me triumphing as Edmund in the converted church in Newton! It was also me in that Verizon commercial with the donuts.

You can keep up with what I'm reading and writing by following me on Facebook. I repost everything on Twitter if that's better for you.
